Nowdays in St. Petersburg there are plenty of
restaurants of any cuisine and for any budget. The prices for dining are much cheaper than
in Moscow. A lunch that consist from some fixed plates and has special discounted price is
called "Business lunch" in Russian and many restaurants offer this option during
lunch-time on working days. Other restaurants can have a 15-20% from prices of the menu
discount for lunch. The vine is imported and is very expensive in the restaurant, so, the
most people would prefer beer. In the supermarket it is possible to find good and not
expensive vine form any part of the world. In totaly in St. Petersburg there are more than
6500 eateries, about 70% from them are "cafes", it means not the coffee-shops,
but not expensive not very fancy small restaurants.
The kitchen is not closed during the day, the
restaurants and cafes work from midday till midnight. People dine and supper any time, but
usually the dinner (lunch) is about 1-2 PM, and the supper (dinner) is about 7-10 PM. Many
"cafes" and "bistros" work 24 hours. Live music is frequent in the
best restaurants.
If you intend to pay by credit card, it is
better if you confirm its acceptance beforehand. American Express cards are not widely
accepted. Visa, Visa Electron, Master Card and Maestro are popular.

"Restaurant" is written in Russian. If you know it, it will be easy for you to
read it even if you do not speak Russian. This word is pronounced as
"Restorán".
Russian food is very tasty and rich in calories. You will
find a lot of places in the city to taste it, from unexpensive bistros where middle-class
local people eat and very popular and cheap "blini" (pancakes) places to
expensive restaurants. Drinks are usually served without ice, if you want it, ask
especially.
The most typical and famous dishes are soups (Borsch,
Solianka), salads, ("Olivie", "Herring under fur-coat"), meat,
(for example, "Beef Stroganoff", Shashlik), chicken ("famouse Kiev
chicken"), fish (sturgeon, salmon), red and black caviar, "blini"
(pancakes), "pelmeni". As a garnish, in Russia are popular potatoes, prepared in
different ways (boiled, fried, baked), also rise, vegetables. To many dishes (soups,
salads, potatoes) a Sour Cream ("Smetana") can be added.
From drinks typical there are: tea, beer (Russian and
imported), vodka, traditional cranberry drink "Mors", old traditional drink
"Kvas", (these are "old popular drinks").
